In August 2019, Frank recognizes his past relationship with Marie in a recently published book. After she moved to the United States and disappeared from his life twenty years ago, Frank sets out on a journey to find her. He traverses a USA gripped by heat wave and political paranoia. Along the way, he meets Liz, a literary agent, and Nina, a sex worker who films her encounters with clients. Frank starts working as Nina's cameraman. During these encounters, they come across a young woman resembling Marie, reigniting Frank's search for his lost love.
