In the aftermath of World War II, Rachael Morgan arrives in Hamburg during the bitter winter of 1946 to reunite with her husband Lewis, a British colonel tasked with rebuilding the city. Upon reaching their new home, Rachael discovers that Lewis has decided they will share the grand house with its previous German owners: a widower named Maximilian and his daughter, Hannah. Tensions rise in this charged atmosphere, as enmity and grief give way to unexpected emotions.
