Trama
The story follows the life of an actor named Holland (played by Klaus Maria Brandauer). He portrays the role of Mephisto, a demon from the Faustian legend, in a stage production. As the Nazis rise to power in pre-WWII Germany, Holland's performance gains unexpected popularity among them. While his career flourishes, he loses friends and associates who flee or are persecuted by the Nazi regime. Holland finds that his character's fame overshadows his own existence, and he must maintain appearances to please his powerful patrons.
