Storia
On the eve of World War II in London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew, a strict but unlucky governess, loses her job yet again and ends up at the doorstep of Delysia LaFosse, an American jazz singer living in chaos due to her constant indecision between love and fame. Pettigrew poses as a social secretary to help LaFosse secure a West End role by navigating her complicated relationships with a feckless producer, a smarmy nightclub owner named Nick, and her devoted piano player Michael who has tickets for them to leave for New York on the Queen Mary. Over the course of 24 hours, Pettigrew also assists an ambitious fashion editor named Philandera in patching things up with her older fiancé, a lingerie designer. By the end of this eventful day, both Pettigrew and LaFosse find themselves changed, having learned valuable lessons about life and love.
Riassunto
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is a 2008 British-American film directed by Bharat Nalluri, based on Winifred Watson's 1938 novel of the same name. Set in London on the eve of World War II, the story follows Miss Guinevere Pettigrew, a strict governess struggling to find employment, and Delysia LaFosse, an American jazz singer leading a chaotic life torn between love and ambition. The film explores themes of class, love, self-discovery, and the power of change through its titular character who, in trying to help others, finds her own purpose. While primarily a comedy-drama with romantic elements, it also offers social commentary on the societal norms of its time.
