In late 1940s Chile during the Cold War, prominent Communist Senator and poet Pablo Neruda accuses the government of betrayal in Congress. Subsequently, his parliamentary immunity is revoked by President González Videla. The Chief of Investigative Police assigns Inspector Óscar Peluchonneau to arrest Neruda, who then goes into hiding with his wife Delia del Carril. They attempt to flee the country but are forced underground.
