During their holiday on Antigua, a young Oxford academic named Perry Makepeace and his attorney girlfriend Gail Perkins meet a Russian millionaire named Dima who owns a peninsula and a diamond watch. Intrigued by his wealth and charisma, they spend time with him and eventually become entangled in his world when he reveals that he is a money launderer for the Russian mafia. Fearing for his life and seeking a better future for his family, Dima decides to become an informant for British intelligence in exchange for asylum. Perry becomes a reluctant intermediary between Dima and the MI6 agent Hector Meredith, leading them on a dangerous journey from Antigua to Paris, where they attempt to broker the deal while being pursued by Dima's associates who want him silenced.
