Storia
In the future on Io, one of Jupiter's moons, Marshal William T. O’Niel (Sean Connery) investigates a series of mysterious worker suicides at a mining colony. As he delves deeper, he uncovers a drug-smuggling operation involving an illegal amphetamine that's causing miners to suffer fatal convulsions. The corrupt manager of the colony, Mark Sheppard (Peter Boyle), and his gang of roughnecks are involved in the operation. When O’Niel threatens to expose them, they try to kill him, but he fights back and takes out their enforcer, Johnson (James Sikking). Despite being marked for murder by the remaining conspirators, O’Niel continues to gather evidence against Sheppard. With the help of a female doctor, Lazlo (Frances Sternhagen), he plans to send incriminating documents to Earth via a departing shuttle. However, Sheppard's men ambush them, killing Lazlo and destroying the documents. In the climactic showdown, O’Niel confronts Sheppard in the mining colony's control room, shooting him through a window when he tries to escape in a spaceship. With Sheppard dead, the surviving conspirators are arrested by Earth authorities.
Riassunto
Outland (1981) is a science fiction thriller directed by Peter Hyams and set in a distant future on Io, one of Jupiter's moons. The film is a 'space western,' drawing parallels with classic Western films but set against the backdrop of a remote mining colony. Sean Connery stars as Marshal William T. O’Niel, who arrives at the colony to investigate a rash of worker suicides. As he digs deeper into the mystery, he uncovers a corrupt drug-smuggling operation involving an illegal amphetamine that's causing miners to suffer fatal convulsions. The film explores themes of power corruption and the struggle between good and evil in an isolated environment. Despite being up against overwhelming odds, O’Niel remains determined to uphold justice and bring those responsible to account. Outland is notable for its stark, realistic portrayal of a future mining colony and its exploration of moral dilemmas faced by its protagonist.
