Jerry Stahl (Ben Stiller), a successful television comedy writer, struggles with an escalating heroin addiction that threatens his career and personal life. While working on the sitcom 'Mr. Chompers', Jerry meets with exec Craig Ziffer (Peter Coyote) and puppeteer Allen (David Cross). He also hangs out with fellow addicts like Nicky and Gus for freebasing sessions. After realizing the severity of his addiction, Jerry checks himself into detox, where he begins to reflect on his past experiences with the help of Kitty (Mary-Louise Parker), a woman he meets there.
