In the 1960s, renowned horror writer Shirley Jackson (Elizabeth Moss) and her husband Stanley Hyman (Michael Stuhlbarg), a literary critic and professor, take in a young couple, Fred and Rose, who have recently moved to the area. Shirley finds inspiration for her next book after meeting Rose, but her creative process is disrupted by the arrival of the couple. Meanwhile, Stanley spars with Fred over academic dominance while Rose attempts to adjust to married life under Shirley and Stanley's roof.
