During World War I, five French soldiers attempt suicide to escape the horrors of The Battle of the Somme, but are instead sentenced to banishment in No Man's Land by a court-martial. The film follows the tale of one soldier, Manech, and his fiancée, Mathilde 'Maddy' Wavelet, who investigates the circumstances surrounding his death years later after contracting polio as a child.
