Storia

In Budapest during the thirties, restaurant owner László hires pianist András to perform in his establishment. Both men become enamored with the beautiful waitress Ilona who inspires András to compose his only song, 'Gloomy Sunday.' The melody becomes popular but takes a dark turn when it begins to trigger suicides among those who hear it. The delicate balance of their erotic ménage à trois is disrupted further when German patron Hans falls in love with Ilona.

Riassunto

Gloomy Sunday - Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod (1999) is a German-Hungarian film directed by Rolf Schübel, set against the backdrop of Budapest in the thirties. The movie revolves around the song 'Gloomy Sunday,' composed by pianist András after he falls in love with Ilona, a waitress at László's restaurant where András plays. The melancholic melody gains popularity but also instills fear due to its alleged connection to suicides. The film explores themes of love, obsession, and the power of music, as the lives of the three main characters intertwine and unravel.
