Storia
George Monroe (Kevin Kline), a recently divorced architect, lives alone in his late father's rundown shack by the California coast. After being fired from his job and diagnosed with terminal cancer on the same day, George decides to spend his remaining time building a dream house for himself and reconnecting with his misanthropic teenage son, Sam (Hayden Christensen). George brings Sam to live with him for the summer, hoping they can rebuild their relationship while working together on the house. However, Sam, who has been engaging in self-destructive behavior like drugs and petty crime, initially refuses to cooperate. Throughout the summer, George struggles with his health, his feelings for Sam's mother Robin (Kristin Scott Thomas), and the challenge of raising a teenager while facing his own mortality. As they work on the house together, George and Sam begin to understand each other better, leading to growth and healing in their relationship.
Riassunto
Life as a House is a poignant drama-comedy directed by Irwin Winkler, released in 2001. The film follows George Monroe, an architect struggling with the monotony of his life after his divorce ten years ago. When he suddenly loses his job and learns he has terminal cancer, George decides to seize control of his remaining time by building a house he can call his own and reconnecting with his teenage son Sam, who has been acting out since his parents' divorce. The story explores the complexities of father-son relationships, grief, and the struggle for redemption in the face of life's challenges. Set against the backdrop of Southern California's coastal landscape, Life as a House is a heartwarming tale of love, loss, and the importance of second chances.
