Claire Bernice Davenport was an English character actress born on April 24, 1933, in Sale, Cheshire, England. Her birth name was Claire Bernice Davenport.
Before embarking on her acting career in 1961, she worked as a school teacher in Salford during the late 1950s. Known for her "junoesque" physique, she became a recognizable face in British comedy and film, often cast in roles that highlighted her imposing presence. Her extensive filmography includes notable appearances as the dancer Yarna d'al' Gargan in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983), the "Fat Lady" in David Lynch's The Elephant Man (1980), and roles in popular series such as Fawlty Towers and Doctor Who. After a series of strokes in the 1990s, she retired from acting and eventually passed away on February 25, 2002, in London.
