Storia

An English couple, Colin and Caroline, travel to Venice to mend their strained relationship. On their first night, they follow a stranger named Robert into his home where he regales them with disturbing stories from his childhood while getting them drunk on wine. The next day, they encounter Robert again and accept another invitation to his opulent apartment. There, they meet his lover, Carla, and witness the couple's unsettling dynamic. Colin becomes increasingly drawn to Carla, leading to complications in his relationship with Caroline. The film culminates in a tense confrontation at an empty theater.

Riassunto

Directed by Paul Schrader in 1990, 'Comfort of Strangers' is a psychological drama-thriller set against the backdrop of Venice. Based on Ian McEwan's novel of the same name, the film explores themes of voyeurism, seduction, and the complexities of relationships. It follows an English couple navigating their marriage while being pursued by a mysterious local named Robert. The movie is notable for its atmospheric portrayal of Venice and Schrader's characteristic exploration of dark human desires.
